You know that feeling when you buy something, doesn’t matter a sweater or a car, you will start noticing the same model whereas before it used to appear that the particular model is the only copy in the world? Even more often you may notice a certain number and then keep noticing the same number all day long, if not for weeks or months.
Similarly, this happens to me and painting. I did not learn to paint from the young age. I started in college. But whenever I tend to start using something that seems new to me, like a new type of shape I didn’t use before, new colors, I will start noticing my new pattern all around the place, no matter where I go.
Patterns follow us around
For example, I have a friend who plays poker online. The site where he plays also offers casino games, classics and video slots. These are largely animated themes, thousands of them. You can visit here and you will immediately understand what I mean. Nevertheless, even though there are probably 3000 or 4000 different slots to play, I only started noticing the style I learned a week ago.
And it’s not all. I’ve ‘seen’ my work on TV, on billboards, in other people’s paintings. Well, not my work exactly but something I have just learned. I wonder, maybe this is what deja vu is? When something is in your subconscious, maybe you learned a new song or had a dream about someone special, you then translate your subconscious visions to the real world.
Or maybe not? The alternative is that it is all just a big coincidence. It’s plausible. It’s like if you would draw a circle in the morning, I’m willing to bet that by the time evening comes you would have counted much more circles than any other shapes. Maybe it is what it is? A power of focus?
Whichever is the case, to me this phenomenon remains to be one of the most fascinating ever. That’s why I would like to ask you. Do you have these moments? Maybe you listened to a song in the morning and the artist ‘followed’ you for the rest of the day? Maybe you constantly see the same number? Maybe you heard a new word and suddenly it seemed that everyone was using that word all the time?
It’s freaky, right? Some call it the Baader-Meinhof Phenomenon, however I don’t believe it applies to all the cases. Which begs the question, is there any other explanation for these coincidences.
